Bobcat of the Week

Congratulations to Professor Hughes, for winning the Ruth M. and Robert H. Kroepsch Award for Excellence in Teaching! Each year, Bates students and recent alumni nominate professors for their outstanding work and attitude among the academic community. Currently “researching the disappearance of African-American jockeys from thoroughbred racing at the turn of the 20th century”, the aim of Hughes’ project demonstrates how broadly interdisciplinary the academia here at Bates is.

Again, I can’t begin to emphasize how dedicated and motivated the professors (not just the students!) are to their work. It’s the number one reason why I applied here- for the sensation of the Bates education. Professors don’t simply expect us to regurgitate facts and dates, but make sure we fully understand why and how they’re there. In fact, I can’t remember a single class without having a professor raising a thought-provoking question or offering extra meetingĀ  time outside class to continue further discussion. Sure, we may be partiers and athletes, but don’t forget- intellectual curiosity is there too.
