Maine Weather

One of the great things about Maine is that the natural scenery is a gem. I’d never thought I’d say this- but as a native of New York City, coming to Bates has definitely transformed my identity as a city girl and led me to appreciate the outdoors more.

During the first two months of fall semester, we Batesies try to enjoy spending as much time as possible outdoors before temperatures drop and it starts snowing.  The weather was unbelievably great today, as highs soared into the 60s. It did rain for a bit, and guess what? There was a gigantic rainbow that formed after. This was actually my first time EVER seeing a clear rainbow outstretched for miles across, in real life. I ran to get my camera five minutes later, but sadly, this is all I could manage to record a glimpse of:

Rainbow!

Although the sunshine was fleeting today, the family troopers of the duck family that lives by the pond carried on normally. I owe it to their quacks for serving as my backup wake-up alarm every morning, in case I oversleep.

DSC08831This is where I usually sit by the pond doing homework, if I ever tire of working in my room. It’s a great study break: an opportunity to de-stress, meditate, and sample the occasional breeze.

Strange creatures, as well as insects, roam throughout the Bates campus (last year, we witnessed a moose sauntering about by P-Gill). Here’s one that managed to land on the screen outside my window:

I have no idea what this is. All I know is that it's some insect, and it's big.

I’ve heard the weather will remain spotlessly mellow for the week. So enjoy it while it lasts.
